Use TimThumb to Add Thumbnail Images Using the First Image in the Post

I have been a fan of the TimThumb script for some time now. It can be used as an alternative to using WordPress Featured Images to display and automatically resize images. Recently there has been quite a lot of activity in TimThumbville. A security vulnerability was discovered which allowed third parties to upload and execute PHP code in the TimThumb cache directory. Following the news of the vulnerability, the current TimThumb developer, Ben Gillbanks has [...]

Resize Images in WordPress Automatically to Any Size You Want

Here’s a little known feature built into WordPress that many people may not be aware of. When you’re using the image uploader to upload pictures to your blog posts, you’ll notice that the image is automatically resized into three different sizes: Thumbnail, Medium and Large. But what if the “Large” size is too wide to fit perfectly across the width of your content area? Set maximum width of uploaded images in WordPress Did you know [...]

Cufon Not Working in IE9

Why am I surprised that something would break in the latest and ‘greatest’ version of Internet Explorer. I haven’t spent much time studying the new browser but recently got around to updating to it for web design purposes. I’d like to just expect IE9 to render websites correctly but being a web designer, you can’t leave things like that to chance. Are you using Cufon on any of your sites? If so, and you’re running [...]

Repeated Background Image Not Repeating Across Full Width of Browser when Resized, or on Mobile Devices

Here’s an interesting problem I’ve come up against numerous times. When you repeat an image across the x axis on fluid or full-width layouts, you’d think it would fill the entire width of the browser window no matter the size of the window. Well it does, but what happens is that if the window area is really small, like on mobile devices, the repeated background stops short of the far right edge of the window. [...]

IE6 Countdown

I don’t even want to waste any energy on writing a post about IE6, but I thought this was at least worth a quick word. I discovered the IE6 Countdown site today from Microsoft which tracks the worldwide usage of Internet Explorer 6. The site is dedicated to watching the usage of Internet Explorer 6 drop to less than 1% worldwide. I know web developers around the world will rejoice when IE6 is finally a [...]

Add a Custom Class to Each Item in the WordPress Menu

Here’s a little know feature with WordPress Menus. Well, it was little known to me at least. I’m working on a site for a client which requires each item in the WordPress main navigation to have a different background color. I’m using the WordPress menu system, and not the standard Thesis menu system. By default there are a bunch of classes that are assigned to each item in the menu list, but I needed to [...]

Preventing the annoying ‘Flash of Unstyled Text’

I’ve been using @font-face lately for custom web fonts and with this, I’ve noticed what’s known as the “Flash of Unstyled Text” or FOUT. This occurs in Firefox and Opera where for a split second the browser will display the standard typeface just before the custom font is rendered. You see a quick flash of the regular font and then the custom font kicks in. Not only is this annoying but it’s unprofessional. It seems [...]

Out With The Old, In With The New – Thesis-Blogs Version 2

For those of you familiar with Thesis-Blogs.com, you’ll notice things look quite different around here. I decided to redesign the site as I was getting tired of the old design and felt that a fresh look was needed. I didn’t want to spend too much time on it, mostly because I didn’t have much free time between working on client projects, and also I wanted something new up fast. So I created this new design [...]

Fawlty Web Design

I am a big fan of the 70′s British TV show Fawlty Towers. I remember watching episodes as a kid which we’d rent from the video store down the road. Not to date myself, but back then the video format of choice was Betamax. Having purchased the complete DVD set a few years back, I’ve now re-watched the episodes countless times. There’s certainly an element of nostalgia for me, but at the same time, it’s [...]

Digging Into WordPress

Digging Into WordPress by Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn the intricacies of WordPress. It works just as well for beginners as it does for more advanced developers. Digging Into WordPress has already seen a couple of editions and the recent release was updated for WordPress 3.0. What’s great about the book is that Chris and Jeff keep it updated as the WordPress feature set evolves. [...]
